From January 2026, I will be working on a new project called Cherish. This will culminate in a joint exhibition with Sally Zaranko at the Dales Countryside Museum (DCM) in the summer of 2027. Using our own experience of the landscape, archival material from the museum and the Nature Recovery Plan for the Yorkshire Dales National Park (YDNPA), the project will celebrate the diverse species that exist across the YDNP thanks to its varied and distinctive landscape.
My work was initially inspired by Marie Hartley's list of bird species seen in and around Askrigg from her 1947 diary (see blog entry HERE). I will be using the DCM archive, the Brian Shorrock archive at The Museum of North Craven Life, the testaments of people living/working in the Yorkshire Dales and my personal observations of bird species found in the Yorkshire Three Peaks area. Whilst these species are in decline, we are very fortunate to have populations of birds - such as lapwings, curlews, ring ouzels, golden plover - that have either disappeared or are more scarce in other parts of the UK. I propose to raise awareness of these species and the special habitats that support them through the creation of a body of new work. The exhibition will be feature my collagraphs, wood engravings and three dimensional work and Sally's linocuts and original art works. The DCM will be providing supporting information, objects from the archive and oral histories from people living and/or working in the Yorkshire Dales.
